Tinubu cancels Lagos events to mourn stampede victims in FCT, Anambra
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has canceled all his official engagements in Lagos, including his planned attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, to honor the victims of the recent stampedes in Abuja and Okija, Anambra State.
The tragic incidents claimed multiple lives and left many injured. The stampedes occurred during food distribution events at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and a community center in Okija.
President Tinubu was set to watch the Lagos Boat Regatta parade from the waterfront of his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi. However, he canceled his appearance after being briefed on the tragedies.
In a statement, the President expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He described the incidents as “disturbing” and urged state and local authorities to implement stricter crowd control measures to prevent such mishaps in the future.
President Tinubu also highlighted the need for operational vigilance by organizations and corporate bodies involved in humanitarian activities. He stressed that these tragedies are avoidable with proper planning and adherence to safety protocols.
“During this season of joy and celebration, we grieve with fellow citizens mourning the painful losses of their loved ones. Our prayers of divine comfort and healing are with them,” the President said.
Despite his absence, President Tinubu extended his best wishes to the Lagos State Government and the organizers of the Regatta, themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” for a successful and safe festival.
