Troops intercept 174 Nigerian men at Niger Republic border
Troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Sector 4 in Diffa, Niger Republic, intercepted 174 able-bodied Nigerian men attempting to cross into border communities in Niger.
The interception occurred in Gueskeru, a strategic border town connecting Yobe State in Nigeria to Niger Republic. According to MNJTF spokesperson Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the men claimed they were heading to the Lake Chad region for fishing activities. However, concerns arose given the area’s history as a haven for terrorist groups like the Lakurawa group, notorious for attacking border communities.
To mitigate potential security threats, Sector 4 troops halted the group and commenced detailed profiling and interrogation to determine their intentions and ensure regional safety.
The MNJTF reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism, safeguarding civilians, and maintaining regional security. It emphasized the importance of heightened border surveillance and cooperation among member nations to curb cross-border insurgency and criminal activities.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
