Argentina’s forward, Lionel Messi made his return to international football, but the world champions were held to a 1-1 draw against Venezuela during the 2026 FIFA World Cup South American qualifiers at the Monumental de Maturin stadium on October 10, 2024.

Messi, who missed Argentina’s previous fixtures in September due to injury, played a crucial role in the opening goal.

His free-kick in the 13th minute set up Nicolas Otamendi, who scored to give Argentina an early lead.

However, Venezuela showcased resilience, equalizing midway through the second half. Veteran striker Salomon Rondon connected with a cross from Yeferson Soteldo, heading the ball past Argentina’s goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to level the match.

Despite dropping points, Argentina remains in a strong position in the qualifying campaign, leading the standings with 19 points from nine games.

They sit three points clear of  Colombia, who suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Bolivia in other qualifying action on the same day.

With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the top six finishers from South America will secure spots in the finals, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
