In a dramatic Europa League clash, Ajax emerged victorious over Panathinaikos in an intense penalty shootout on Thursday, securing a 13-12 win after 34 nerve-wracking spot kicks.

The tie, which took place at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, was decided in the most thrilling fashion after both teams remained deadlocked on aggregate.

The match saw Panathinaikos take the lead in the second leg, winning 1-0 on the night, which brought the aggregate score to 1-1. With the tie level, the game proceeded to penalties, where the drama truly unfolded.

Each team took 17 penalties, with Ajax’s Anton Gaaei finally clinching the victory by slotting home the decisive kick.

Ajax’s goalkeeper, Remko Pasveer, was instrumental in the win, saving five penalties and even stepping up to score one himself. His heroic performance was a key factor in Ajax’s advancement to the next round.

“It was incredible,” said Ajax coach Francesco Farioli, praising his team’s resilience and determination. “The spirit and commitment of the team were great tonight. We are not perfect, but we cannot say that the players did not give everything.”

Reflecting on the match, Farioli acknowledged the challenge of entering a penalty shootout after such a hard-fought game. “The match was fantastic. It is difficult to go into a penalty shootout after such a match. It may have taken a little longer, but we have taken an important step again.”

Despite holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Ajax faced a late scare when Panathinaikos’ Tete scored in the 89th minute to force extra time. However, the Dutch side held their nerve in the shootout, securing a memorable win.

Ajax will now prepare to face Jagiellonia Białystok of Poland in the play-off round next week, as they continue their quest in the Europa League.
