Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has appointed Chidimma Adetshina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, as the state’s ambassador, recognizing her as a symbol of resilience and excellence.

The appointment was made on Thursday during Chidimma’s visit to the Enugu Government House, accompanied by her father, Okechukwu Onwe.

Governor Mbah commended the South African-born Nigerian model for her determination and perseverance, calling her a “true representation of the people of Enugu.”

Mbah also emphasized the positive influence Chidimma’s journey could have on the youth, particularly young girls in the state, by inspiring them to overcome challenges and strive for success.

“Your story is inspiring. Despite attempts to malign and discourage you, you demonstrated that you are a true daughter of Enugu State.

You overcame those challenges with the grit and resilience the people of Enugu are known for. You can act as a major influence on our young people, especially girls,” Mbah said.

The governor assured Chidimma of the state’s support as she prepares to represent Nigeria in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.

He encouraged her to use her platform to inspire and mentor young people, particularly by sharing her journey and experiences.

In her response, Chidimma expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu for their warm reception.

“I do feel that my story is a very powerful one, not only in Nigeria but all over the world. A lot of youths can resonate with my story and they can learn from my journey,” she said.

Chidimma, born in 2001 in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father from Enugu and a Mozambican-born mother, faced controversy earlier this year during her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant.

Criticism arose over her nationality, leading her to withdraw from the competition after the South African Department of Home Affairs accused her mother of alleged fraud and identity theft. Chidimma denied the allegations, maintaining her innocence.

Following her withdrawal, Chidimma entered the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where she emerged as the winner on August 14, 2023.

Despite criticism and accusations that she won “out of pity,” Chidimma defended her victory, stating that she earned her title through hard work and perseverance.

As the newly appointed Enugu State ambassador, Chidimma is expected to inspire and engage with young people in the state, serving as a symbol of resilience and determination.
