Gov Alia approves ₦75,000 minimum wage for workers

The Governor of Benue State has officially approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for state workers, offering a significant increase in compensation for employees across the region.

The announcement was made on Monday at the State Secretariat following discussions with representatives from organized labour.

According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, the Governor also assured workers that the remaining three months of the five-month backlog of arrears will be paid, as previously promised. These arrears will be included in the 2024 budget and disbursed starting from November 2024.

Governor Alia explained that the new wage was set after careful consideration of various concerns raised by the organized labour, including transportation allowances, tax relief, and work-off days.

While the national minimum wage was set at ₦70,000, the Governor opted to exceed that amount to better meet the workers’ needs.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people, emphasizing his resolve to support the workers of Benue State and alleviate their financial burdens through these improvements.
