Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has made history as the first-ever champions of Nigeria’s premier inter-collegiate football competition, the Varsity Cup 2024.

In a pulsating final held at the University of Benin Sports Complex, Benin City, Edo State, JOSTUM edged past the University of Ilorin in a 3-2 penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The hero of the day was JOSTUM’s goalkeeper, Jacob Targema, whose remarkable performance between the posts proved decisive.

With three penalty saves, Targema not only secured the trophy for his team but also earned personal accolades.

He was named the Player of the Tournament (MVP) and recognized as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, cementing his place in the competition’s history.

This victory underscores JOSTUM’s dominance in collegiate football and sets the stage for more competitive Varsity Cup tournaments in the future.

JOSTUM’s road to the final began in the group stages where they dominated their group with victories over Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Prince Abubakar Audu University, Ayingba. A hard-fought draw with eventual finalists, UNILORIN.
