Man electrocuted to death while attempting to vandalize transformer in Lagos

A tragedy unfolded on September 1, 2024, in Ikoyi, Lagos, as an unidentified man was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a transformer belonging to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) on Awolowo Road.

According to reports from the Lagos State Police Command, the incident occurred at approximately 4:02 AM, when a security guard on duty at a nearby company witnessed the man climbing a gate near the transformer.

Suspected of attempting to tamper with or vandalize the equipment, the man tragically made contact with the high-voltage electrical installation and was electrocuted on the spot.

He fell into the compound, where he was found dead.

The Lagos Police were swiftly notified, and an Anti-Crime Patrol team was dispatched to the scene.

After documenting the site and contacting the PHCN office, the police initiated an investigation into the incident.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the death, reiterating the severe risks associated with vandalizing electrical installations.

He urged the public to avoid such illegal activities and called for greater community vigilance to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The body of the deceased has been taken to the mortuary, and efforts are ongoing to identify him and notify his family.
