Iconic singer Mariah Carey is facing an overwhelming tragedy following the devastating loss of her mother, Patricia Carey, and her sister, Alison Carey, who both passed away over the weekend.

The Grammy-winning artist expressed her profound sorrow in a statement released on Monday, sharing the heartbreaking news with her fans and the world.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

Despite the profound grief, Carey expressed gratitude for having spent time with her mother before her passing and requested privacy as she navigates this difficult time.

The causes of death for both women have not been disclosed. Patricia Carey, 87, was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent, and had a complicated relationship with her daughter.

In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer candidly discussed the pain and confusion stemming from their relationship, often marked by professional rivalry and emotional strain.

Despite these challenges, Carey dedicated her memoir to her mother, expressing a belief that Patricia did the best she could, and vowing to love her “the best I can, always.”

Alison Carey, 63, had been in hospice care before her death, according to a friend who spoke with the Times Union newspaper in New York.

The relationship between Mariah and Alison had also been strained, marked by periods of estrangement due to concerns for Mariah’s emotional and physical safety.

This rift was further deepened when Alison sued Mariah for $1.2 million, alleging “immense emotional distress” caused by the content in the memoir.

The Carey family has faced significant loss over the years, with Mariah’s father, Alfred, passing away in 2002 from cancer at the age of 72.

Mariah Carey, one of the most successful singers in music history, continues to captivate audiences with her enduring talent.

Her holiday classic, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” remains the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist, and her record 19 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles solidify her legacy.

Despite the public achievements, this latest personal tragedy adds a poignant chapter to the singer’s life story, highlighting the complexities and challenges she has faced both on and off the stage.
