In a controversial statement, former Edo State Governor and current Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has mocked his successor, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy Obaseki, for being childless.

Oshiomhole made these remarks in a video shared by Television Continental (TVC) on their X handle on Sunday.

The senator’s comments were reportedly a response to a statement allegedly made by Betsy Obaseki, where she claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, does not have a wife. Oshiomhole took exception to this and launched into a personal attack on the governor and his wife.

“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying that our candidate has no wife. She is the most, I’m sorry that she has to say that, because here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki, they have no child, they are childless,” Oshiomhole said in the video.

He further criticized the couple for not adopting a child, stating, “They are even not ready to adopt. I mean, I don’t blame, anybody should not have a child. But people who have love for children, they go to motherless homes and adopt children. They have not adopted, they are both in their 60s. So you married, I don’t know whether it’s a contract or whatever it is, but they have no child.”

Oshiomhole’s remarks have sparked widespread outrage and debate, with many condemning the personal nature of his comments. The issue of childlessness is often considered a deeply personal matter, and Oshiomhole’s comments have been viewed by some as crossing a line.

Neither Governor Obaseki nor his wife has responded publicly to the remarks as of the time of this report. The incident adds another layer of tension to the already heated political atmosphere in Edo State, as the state prepares for upcoming elections.
