A tragic fire outbreak engulfed a parish of the Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday night, trapping several worshippers inside.

The incident occurred around 9:30 pm at Wisdom Estate, Road 1G, Olohunda Road, in Lagelu Local Government Area, while the church was hosting its regular Friday vigil.

Eyewitnesses reported that some worshippers were asleep when the fire broke out. One source recounted, “Some worshippers had already slept off to rest before the vigil began when the incident happened.”

Another witness described the terrifying scene, highlighting the plight of an elderly woman unable to evacuate in time: “There was an aged woman who could not walk properly. She was still inside the church when the fire was raging seriously.”

A church member, speaking anonymously, confirmed that people were still inside the building as the flames intensified, saying, “I will get back to you later, please.”

Cause of Fire Unclear

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Oyo State Fire Services General Manager, Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed that firefighters responded to the emergency following a call from one Kunle Junaid. He assured the public that further updates would be provided.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the need for increased safety measures in places of worship, especially during vigils and other large gatherings. Further investigations into the fire’s cause are expected to shed light on the tragedy.
