We will only allow Sharia Court in Oyo if… – Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has acknowledged awareness of plans to inaugurate a Sharia Court in the state.

A flyer seen by reporters indicates that the event, organized by the Oyo State chapter of the Supreme Council of Shari’ah in Nigeria, is scheduled for January 11, 2025, in Oyo town.

The development has sparked criticism from youths in the Southwest, who argue that Sharia law has not benefited the northern states practicing it and is unnecessary for the region.

In a video shared by his Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Olorundare Olamide Wilson, Governor Makinde stated that he would oppose the establishment of a Sharia Court if it contravenes the laws and Constitution of Nigeria.

“I said that people may try but for me, the law and constitution of Nigeria are what I’m sworn to and that if they are within the law, fine. But if they are not, they should expect that I will insist that the law must be followed,” he said.
